Forecasting Next Season’s FIFA Player Ratings with Machine Learning
Everyone knows Erling Haaland — the Norwegian striker who’s taken the football world by storm. In just over two years, his transfer value skyrocketed from €8 million to €110 million. But how many people truly saw it coming when he was still playing for Molde?
Apparently, not many — but at least one person at Red Bull Salzburg did.
This post, the final chapter in the Football Insights from FIFA Data series, asks a question that excites scouts and analysts alike: can we predict the future? After examining how players evolve with age, and how their value reflects that evolution, we now turn to a harder challenge — forecasting what comes next.
Specifically, we’ll try to predict whether a player’s FIFA rating will improve in the next edition of the game.
